Develop main branch CI build and tests

Main branch should be tested more rigorously in addition to the tests performed on merge requests.

Subtasks

  • Improve .gitlab-ci.yml to run on main branch pushes and on scheduled builds
  • [ ] Create comparison test on main with more coverage than self_test (more modes, longer files)
  • additional testing on merges to main beyond finding change modes
