This is the version with resolved merge commit to bring main-pc up to latest main. This is almost identical to MR !1930 (closed) but has commit 63d04438 reverted due to it causing severe new issues.

Verification and discussion was in MR !1921 (closed). This also incorporates later changes that were separately tested in MR !1925 (closed) (minus temporary gitlab-ci changes)
